Reading a lipid panel: what each number is

A lipid panel usually reports four main numbers. Knowing what each one measures makes it easier to ask the right questions. This explains what the values are — it does not replace a doctor reading your results.

This is general information for comparing packages — not individual medical advice, and not a substitute for seeing a doctor.

The four values on the report

Total cholesterol is the overall figure; LDL is the fraction often called "bad" cholesterol; HDL the one often called "good"; and triglycerides are a separate fat linked to diet and alcohol. Your report always prints its reference range beside your value.

Fasting before the test

Most packages ask for 8–10 hours of fasting, water allowed. If you did not fast as instructed, triglycerides can read higher than they are — tell the staff before the draw rather than after.
